Spectral Evidence - working notes

Not all of my ideas actually make it into my stories. Sometimes, I change my mind, and sometimes my characters change my mind for me. Sometimes the line of the story gets lost in the weeds of the details so that extra data has to be eliminated.

Below are some of my design notes for "Spectral Evidence" - I thought you'd like to see a glimpse of the inner workings of my story development.

Rafe's old partner - Kasperov

God gave his archangels weapons – because even the Almighty knew you don’t fight evil with tolerance and understanding

Charlie/Tony arrive later afternoon – Sarge gave them half shift. Can we help before tomorrow’s official start? Files didn’t arrive yet. You want us in uniform or not?

Rafe – gotta be serious to be getting two Jedi from the Four-One.

Files arrive. Four men start reading case histories and organizing data.

Pictures of victims on walls, dates and times written on whiteboard.

T: Did you get Metrocard maps? H: What?

T: You can get a tracking history of entry and egress points from the MTA. H: Didn’t know you could do that…. T: They don’t advertise it.

C: Looking at crimescene photos. All of these victims were posed…. Something is ringing a bell with me on these. Can we show these to someone? H: Civillian? C:Yeah.  H:Can this person we trusted. C: Grins. Definitely.

C&H returns to precinct. C gets call and excuses himself. Harvey appears. I found her. H: Can I talk to her? Harvey nodded. She’s agreed. We’ll do it tonight.

(Meeting with murdered woman. H can’t see her, but Harvey acts as interpreter. Finds out about “Aleumdaun” (Korean=Beautiful) makeup. Night cream tried. Feels very sleepy. Wakes up groggy and nearly paralyzed to see naked man looming over her. Tries to scream but only light moan comes out. Feels hands on throat. Pain. Pain and blackness. All of a sudden awake again – sees the man (in a black suit – white shirt/black tie and short gloves – strips naked – huge cross tattoo on his back – over my body – I’m floating above it. I know I’m dead. (cries). Then sees my makeup lady – xxxxxx – come into to the room. Calls him “David”. Has him lift my body off the bed and into the bathroom.  Gentle about washing me. Dried and hair styled. Brought back to bed. Xxxxx applies makeup and poses me. Takes all my Aleumdaun makeup away with her.

I need evidence. Did you ever let anyone else use it? Did you ever give any to a friend? Thinks. Sherry! I gave Sherry – we worked at yyy together – a lipstick. Didn’t like the color.

To Harvey – can you have her draw the tat for me? Never thought I’d get leads from the murder victim herself.

How did you meet xxxx?  (samples at face-picking salon? Card? TBD) more info. H&H leave.

T: Excited. Got two breaks!! First off, there IS a periodicity to the kills – look at this – shows 8-point star. Pagan festivals. Look. Working from Mabon forwards! H: quizzical. C: Cap encourages us to study something we like – Tony always was fascinated with Celtic/Gaelic mythology.

Metrocard maps come back – every victim went down to Chinatown  multiple times. Same spot, same time every time for the women. I’m extrapolating about a 10-block area. Just don’t know WHY they’d be going down there so often.

C: I may be able to shed some light on that. To H: we’ve got a meeting Anna Wintour

Clonazepam - an antipsychotic drug - treatment for REM behavior disorder. In this disorder, people don't become paralyzed during REM sleep. That means they act out their dreams, talking, thrashing and even punching or hitting in their sleep. Allows for sleep paralysis during REM sleep

Physiologically, sleep paralysis is closely related to REM atonia, the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Sleep paralysis occurs either when falling asleep, or when awakening from sleep. When it occurs upon falling asleep, the person remains aware while the body shuts down for REM sleep, a condition called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis.
